WATCH: The Êvê’s “Erhverhs” not Hebrews: Part 1 – Akwetey Amaah

Shalom, everyone! The following is part 1 of the series of video lectures called “The Êvê’s “Erhverhs” not Hebrews,” by renown educator Rabbi Akwetey Amaah. In this installment, Rabbi Akwetey answers a question from one of his students:

“I am an Ewe and I think we follow the same migration history as the Ga’s till we reached Togo. Are you able to enlighten us from both Historical & Biblical perspective?”

In his response Rabbi Akwetey discusses why the Êvês (Ehvehs) and Ga-Dangmes have the same oral history – they are the same people, the Erverhs (Ehvehs), who migrated to West Africa from Israel via Egypt. They occupied a large swath of territory (Êvê-nyigba) before this land was split into four different countries (Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria) by European colonial powers at the Berlin Conference of 1884.

Rabbi Akwetey also discusses the origin of the word “Hebrew”:
