WATCH: Shem in the Land of Africa: Part 2A – “Noah and His Sons” (2017) – Akwetey Amaah

Shalom, everyone! The following is Part 2A – “Noah and His Sons,” from the lecture series “Shem in the Land of Africa,” by renown educator Rabbi Akwetey Amaah. In this installment, Rabbi Akwetey discusses how the story of Noah and his sons became the single biggest source of grief for Black Africans. As it is widely believed and accepted that Ham was the progenitor of the black race, many have been taught to believe that Noah‘s curse of Ham‘s youngest son, Canaan, was the justification for the enslavement of Black Africans. For thousands of years, this dangerous idea has been promoted among Europeans.

Rabbi Akwetey also discusses the other long-held harmful racist beliefs by Europeans and Christian institutions, relegating black people to a non-human status, specifically the “Pre-Adamic Theory,” and the “Mark of Cain” legend promoted by the Mormon Church from 1848 – 1978Rabbi Awketey reminds us that the Torah is an instrument of communication from the Creator to mankind, and the Torah requires careful and precise study as The Creator often speaks in layers of understanding:
