The Canaanites: The Children of Seir
The Children of Seir were a Hamitic/Troglodyte family descended from Seir son of Hur, son of Hivi, son of Canaan, son of Ham (Jasher 10:28). Seir‘s father Hur was the progenitor of the Horites. The Horites were said to be troglodytes or cave dwellers or cave men. From the Horites came Seir who was the grandfather of one of Esau‘s wives. After being subdued and driven out of Mount Seir by Esau‘s descendants, the Edomites, the Horites migrated north into Anatolia (Turkey), Europe, Central Asia and North Asia where they intermarried with the sons of Japheth.
Seir had issue:
- Five sons Lothan, Shobal, Zibeon, Dishan, and Ezer. Two additional sons, Anah and Dishon, are mentioned in the Book of Genesis, however, the Book of Jasher states they were actually grandson and great-grandson respectively of Seir through his third son Zibeon.
The Children of Seir settled in the mountainous region between the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba, and called it Mount Seir. Esau son of Isaac married Oholibamah daughter of Zibeon, son of Seir. Esau would later settle in Mount Seir with his family, the Edomites, leaving his parents behind in the Land of Canaan after his younger brother Jacob received the blessing of the firstborn son. The Children of Seir intermarried with the Edomites and were eventually brought under Edomite rule. Their land, Mount Seir, was renamed Edom.
