Shalom, everyone! The following are the blessings that are traditionally recited upon awakening from sleep in the morning. Even though these blessings are a post-exilic tradition, it is good to bless and thank YAH for His continual mercy on us by waking us up each morning, keeping us safe through the night, and allowing our bodies to function so that we can continue our lives here on Earth. Our forefather Abraham blessed and thanked YAH for all His mercies. It is good to bless and thank and YAH for all His mercies upon us. Our lives are a truly a privilege YAH bestows upon us.
The blessings upon awakening in the morning are recited in the following order:
- Modeh Ani – recited immediately upon awakening;
- Netilat Yadayim Shacharit – recited after the washing of hands immediately after the “Modeh Ani.” Ritual handwashing takes place outside the restroom using a wash cup and a basin; If one washes one’s hands in a restroom, wait until after leaving the restroom to recite this blessing. No blessings should ever be recited in a restroom or other unclean place.
- Asher Yatzar – recited immediately upon leaving the restroom after relieving oneself and, once again, washing one’s hands, this time without the blessing for “Netilat Yadayim”;
- Elohai Neshamah – recited after the “Asher Yatzar.”
Disclaimer: Please note that whenever speaking directly to YAH through prayer, worship, reciting blessings, or reading the Holy Scriptures, one may say YAH’s Name, “YHƲH” (pronounced “Yeh-Veh”), however, please do so carefully with reverence and humility. YAH’s Name should never be used in casual conversation, neither should His Name be used in any place where there is uncleanness, filth, immodesty, idolatry, sexual perversion, nor should the Name ever be used in insults, profanity or unclean words. One should never curse YAH’s Name as by doing so one will incur severe penalties. YAH is very jealous for His Name and will not hold the one guiltless who misuses His Name.
