About This Month

Bul, the Eighth Month of the ecclesiastical Hebrew calendar, is a named month in the Tanakh. The word “Bul” is a Canaanite-Phoenician word meaning “rain (for crops).” Bul later became known as “Marcheshvan” after the Babylonian exile. The word “Marcheshvan” comes from the Akkadian word “waraḫsamnu” which means “eighth month.” Marcheshvan is sometimes shortened to “Cheshvan.”
